Sewhandy Sewing Machine

This SINGER Toy Sewing Machine type was not actually marketed as a "Sewhandy" machine until late 1950 when SINGER resurrected the Sewhandy trademark. Before that time, they were advertised only by SINGER Model number. To keep it simple, I will refer to all of them by SINGER Model number.

It is said that Isaac Singer believed that if you teach a child to sew, then the adult would know how to sew. If that is true, then what better way to draw in the children than with their own size sewing machine.

This SINGER Toy Sewing Machine series originated with 1910 - 1913 Model 20-1. It can be identified by the hand wheel design which is referred to the X-wheel or the 4-spoke, and lack of tension discs.  The Model 20-1 was marketed by SINGER as both a toy for a child and as a small size sewing machine for college students or traveling adults.

The second model design (20-3) had a spiral hand wheel with 8 spokes (1914-1922).  The thread tension regulator with discs was added to this model, but the thread route was not numbered. The groove for the table clamp is flat and squared off on this version rather than the V-shape groove that would be seen on the next models.

The next Model 20 featured the black painted 7-spoke hand wheel with a nickel plated rim. It does not have the thread route numbering system that was added to their models in later years. Later models would have the thread numbers stamped on the machine. Solid hand wheels showed up on even later machines.

SINGER Model 40D Toy Sewing Machines were made in Great Britain during the 1940's thru 1960's. Most of the Model 40Ds were crank machines, but electric models were also produced. The Model 50D was an electric toy sewing machine, and was also produced in Great Britain during the 1960's.  Both were chain stitch machines. Production of both models after 1950 were known as Sewhandy machines.

There are two different sewing machines that we call the Sewhandy. The original Sewhandy, below on the right, is the predecessor to the SINGER Featherweight Model 221. This Sewhandy was manufactured by a series of companies - STANDARD Sewing Machine Company of Cleveland, FREDERICK OSANN Company, GENERAL ELECTRIC, and OSANN Corporation (SINGER) from 1928 thru 1938. The second machine is the SINGER Sewhandy Toy Sewing Machine. This machine has also been around for generations since the 1910 series model 20. It was known by various model names over the years, and was not called the Sewhandy until SINGER began using the trademark name in the early 1950's
